Yes? No? It does rub on sharp turns, took it for a small test ride. Will have to bash some panels, then adjust the steering limiters, maybe a SMALL 1/4 inch spacer . Still...

Or I could just put 3 inch lift spindles on the front and lift the rear with the torsion bar.  Though If i am going to invest in new suspension parts, I’ll probably just go 3x3 rear swing arms and upgrade the shocks/coilovers, and up front look into a-arm.  But that’s getting awful serious for a 95% road-toy.

1 st  car related photo of a 1 year old cbell was taken of me in my dads baja bug. This thing is sweet. Looks great.

Do the cheapo mods that are as non-destructive as possible - get destructive when you just want to go all in.

That’s my take on it.

Well, I’m already pretty close to the point of starting to cut rust from the body and weld in patches.  So grinding and tack welding seams to make room for tires isnt too bad...

Yes. But the channels need fixing before spending on suspension upgrades ?

For the most part, the channels look fine, e x cept near the battery. I question if its worth repairing them on a baja with no heat anyway...

Besides conveying hot air, t he heater channels are actually structural members, at least for the body of the car . If you’re planning on using the baja as a baja, which is offroad and with jumps and bumps and lots of stress on the body , it’s probably worth getting them all nice and sturdy.

Not being difficult here, the picture seemed to show rust on the lower right quarter panel, if the outside is that bad there is a probable risk that the channel behind is on its way out.

That’s battery acid damage from a leaking battery. It also ate the floor panel. The only two spots of rust on the car. I am actually cutting that out this weekend and double checking everywhere else to be 100% sure.

O ther than the passenger floor pan, and that quarter panel, I have not been able to find serious rust anywhere else. N ot even near the brake master cylinder. Other than someone cutting its nose and tail off to make it a fiberglass baja, it’s actually a startingly clean car for 50 yea rs old.

As it stands, it’s a balljoint car. Not exactly a prime target for SERIOUS baja stuff. If I did want to go the distance, there would be fair amounts of chassis plating/ reinforcement and roll cage fabrication anyway. And probably cutting the entire head of the pan off to make it IFS.

That’s pretty impressive, limited rust for a 50 y. o. car ... good luck !
